The group Mountain People and Places originally erected the Coal Miners’ Memorial of Dickenson County in Clinchco, Virginia, in 1995. Dennis Reedy and Marlon Van Colley paid for two additional walls containing more names to the memorial in 2017, at which time the memorial was rededicated in honor of Clinchco’s 100th anniversary of being a town. The memorial is dedicated to miners who died while on the job and it includes 309 names of coal miners. On both sides of the memorial are large lumps of coal.
