Harlan, Kentucky, is home to a monument commemorating the ‘The Thirtieth Anniversary of the Shipment of the First Car of Coal from Harlan County,’ which left Harlan County in 1911. Located near the courthouse in Harlan, Kentucky, the Harlan Mining Institute and The City of Harlan erected this memorial in 1941. Dedicated to ‘the people,’ this memorial is a wall made up of blocks of coal.
